ELA/English Language Arts 1 is a course designed to present a broad scope in grammar, composition and literature. Students will read short stories, poetry, drama, novels, and a variety of non-fiction. Students will also improve their writing skills and learn useful strategies and techniques to progress toward mastery of the curriculum.

English 1 course breakdown by marking period:
Marking Period 1: Short Stories & Novel Selection
During marking period 1, we will focus on the plot structure of a story and the use of literary devices in literature. As we read, we will also focus the topic of Theme. Students will be writing essays based on reading selections covered in class. Students will also be listening to stories on audio in which they will have to take notes and respond to questions individually or in groups.
Marking Period 2: Epic Poetry/Poetry
During marking period 2, students will be introduced to Epic Poetry and read various Epic Myths. A brief overview of Mythology (Greek) will also be taught. Students will learn to analyze and respond to various poems throughout the marking period.
Marking Period 3: Nonfiction, Novel Selection, and the Research Paper
During marking period 3, students will be given a novel selection that we will read in class. Supplemental readings (nonfiction) will accompany novel selections.
For the Research Paper, students will be given a topic and outline so that they may complete a research paper. Students will learn MLA format and conduct their own research at home and in school on computers or chrome-books.
Marking Period 4: Shakespearean Drama
During marking period 4, students will be reading and discussing Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. Additionally, students will be given supplemental readings that will focus on the Elizabethan Era. A group marking period project may be given during the marking period, time permitted. Additional information will be given as the marking period progresses.

Classwork rubrics will be used in grading group work, participation, and behavior, among other areas. Please be aware of what is required of you to do well. I will give you copies of rubrics and will often review/refer to these rubrics with the class.

*Hand in assignments on time!
*Homework is due the beginning of class. Late assignments will receive half credit the next day, and continue to lose points; work that is very late may not be accepted at all.

*20% of your grade is Class Participation, so you are encouraged to speak and participate in class.

Any missed assignments due to absences must be made up and in a timely fashion. Check Google Classroom, ask a classmate, or see me to find out what work you have missed. YOU are responsible for you grades, and to remember what you have missed and need to make up. If you will be out for a long time or know when you will be out, please see me. Failure to complete any missed assignments when absent will result in a zero grade.
